Fortnite Treasure Chest Cake

I spend the week leading up to my kids’ birthday weekends making a special cake per their request. This weekend, we are celebrating my son’s 9th birthday.

As like many kids, my son spends much of his free time playing the popular game Fortnite. This year, my son asked for a Fortnite cake…but not just any Fortnite cake…he wanted a treasure box cake that glows, and has smoke coming out of the top, just like the video game.

I was really apprehensive about taking on the cake design he wanted because of the amount of work it would require, lack of confidence in my abilities, and how little time I realistically had to to build the cake.

In my son’s eyes, there was no other option…his mind was set and this was the cake he would have for his birthday party. After receiving some encouragement from a few other people, I decided to go for it.

So after five very late nights, the cake is complete, and I am so happy with the way it turned out!

Onto the deets…

I made the treasure box using gingerbread. I cut 2” strips and hand carved lines into each strip to make them look like wood planks.

Before baking the gingerbread, I applied cocoa powder around the edges of the wood planks to give them some color.

Once the planks were done baking, I let them cool overnight. Using a serrated knife, I scraped the edges of planks so they would fit nicely together.

I used melted chocolate to glue the planks together to form the chest. When I constructed the lid, I did not glue it to the bottom half of the chest so we could remove the lid later on.

The next day, I cut out fondant pieces to trim the treasure chest.

Then, my daughter and I made shortbread cookies and decorated them as V-Bucks to fill the treasure chest.

Finally, my daughter and I baked strawberry cake and covered it with gray tinted buttercream to make the rock terrain that the treasure chest rests on.

I still have to find a light to put inside the treasure chest so that it gives a glowing effect, but for now I’m pretty happy with the way this cake has turned out!
